It gets more than tedious, it becomes down right frustrating.
I used VirtualDubMod. It's a free program you can download right off the site, and it's pretty easy to use. It's apparently also a good program to convert video files so you can edit them--such as Divx to an uncompressed AVI, but I haven't tried that out yet. After that I just used Image Ready to make the gifs. :)
