Oh my god! This episode was awesome! I mean, don't get me wrong, I've still loved the past few episodes, even if they didn't have much to do with the main plot, but to finally get back to the apocalypse and just to do it so amazingly--just...gah.

Okay, let me just flail a little bit at the fact that Castiel wouldn't let Anna kill Sam because he's his friend. I have been fascinated with the relationship between Sam and Castiel ever since he took Sam's hand and was all "Yes. The boy with the demon blood." And Sam went from fanboying to :(

Seriously, I've always wished for more scenes with Sam and Castiel interacting. Sure, I love his and Dean's moments--they're usually very funny, or very intense, but I mean--Sam is the one who believed in angels and prayed all the time only now he supposed to be the devil's vessel, and Castiel always followed orders and now he is siding with the person who is supposed to help Lucifer end the world and just. So many wonderful issues and tension. I love it.

Anyone know of some good fics focusing on Sam and Castiel?

Moving on.

I love younger John! Who was so nice an polite and cheerful and so different than what he became to be. And then trouble comes and you can see the characteristics of future John--stubborn, determined, confident and damn certain he's going to be useful.

I was really happy about Sam's talk with John. I've always felt terrible that the last words John ever said to him were "Can you get me a cup of caffeine," so I really hope that getting to say all those things to his dad, even if his dad didn't know it was his son talking, helped him in some way.

And oh! The boys trying to convince Mary to leave John so they wouldn't be born! And how quick both of them were to accept that, to want that. It makes me ache for them. But she was already pregnant so of course she had to stay, even if the angel's didn't come and interfere, because a Dean without a Sam? No. Just no. And I can't imagine Dean wanting that. Sam, maybe, but not Dean.

MICHAEL!! MichaelMichaelMichael! Of course it's in the bloodline! They tried to get John to break the first seal before Dean right? *snorts* And Cain and Abel, of course. Let's throw in some more brother killing brother stories in there.

You know, I thought for a minute there that Michael might have gone all "Sure, I'll fix your brother. If you say yes." And I'm a little curious as to why he didn't. It makes me think that he knows a whole lot more about what's going on and what going to happen than say, Zachariah and everyone else. He was very confident that it was going to happen, so he didn't need to use Sam as bargaining material. It makes me nervous.

And I love the discussion on free will. I mean, it's been a theme on this show from the very beginning, but I love how Michael just blatantly put it out there. And how Dean refuses to budge--at least on the outside. I mean, his face after Michael spoke... Sam may have been the one to voice those doubts, but I'm sure Dean has some of his own.

The end with John and Mary just tore me up. I think it was great, ending with the "angel's watching over you" line, since it has definitely been on my mind these past few seasons.

Gah. SUCH a great episode. I can't wait until the next one.
